MA v. Karen Read (2024) – Day 22 Trial Summary
Day 22 of the Commonwealth v. Karen Read trial marked one of the most explosive and legally defining turning points of the proceedings, shifting sharply from baseline physical asset tracking to a deep exposure of systemic investigative bias. The afternoon commenced with brief testimony from Sergeant Nicholas Barros, who established the physical condition of the defendant’s Lexus SUV upon its operational transfer to Dighton. The session then gave way to the direct examination and initial cross-examination of State Police Trooper Michael Proctor, the lead investigator on the case.
In a bruising confrontation on the stand, the prosecution was forced to front-load, and the defense aggressively weaponized, Proctor’s personal, real-time peer-to-peer text messages. These logs revealed highly prejudicial slurs directed at the defendant, documented behind-the-scenes attempts to secure an “accidental diagnosis” from the Medical Examiner, and exposed instances of supervisory staff actively condoning a complete erosion of professional, objective standards.

Connection to the case
The case primary lead investigator responsible for directing the homicide inquiry, coordinating witness interviews, managing crime scene searches, and overseeing secure evidence processing into John O’Keefe’s death.
Summary Of Testimony
Proctor detailed his initial observations of the victim’s body, noting localized arm abrasions and facial swelling, and chronicled processing the defendant’s Lexus SUV alongside specialized technicians. He testified that an audit of O’Keefe’s personal car yielded zero damage. However, the core of his testimony shifted to his personal text logs. Proctor was forced to read messages where he characterized the suspect as a “whack job c***.” He admitted to writing that if another trooper spoke to the Medical Examiner, they would secure an “accidental diagnosis,” later calling the official “undetermined” manner of death determination a reflection of the defendant being a “whack job.” He characterized these on-the-record statements as “regrettable.”
Under a fierce cross-examination by Alan Jackson, Proctor was forced to acknowledge text updates sent to his bosses stating “No nudes so far” while reviewing the defendant’s private digital photos. Crucially, he admitted that his direct supervisor, Sergeant Yuriy Bukhenik, actively “liked” a highly unprofessional text string Proctor sent that read: “Going through the retard’s phone.” Finally, Proctor acknowledged within the trial index that a segment of Ring camera video had been deleted. His cross-examination was deferred as part-heard to open the next session.
