Stepmom Murder Trial | CO v. Letecia Stauch | Day 18 | Trial Catchup

This is the Day 18 of 20 trial report of the murder trial of Letecia Stauch, accused of murdering her stepson Gannon Stauch however she pled not guilty by reason of insanity claiming multiple personalities compelled her to kill her stepson. A jury of her peers convicted her of all counts!

Case Report

Factual background:

On January 27, 2020, while Gannon’s father was away on National Guard deployment, Letecia Stauch killed Gannon in his bedroom.

Stauch entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. The defense’s sole expert witness, psychiatrist Dr. Dorothy Otnow Lewis, testified that severe, suppressed childhood trauma had caused Stauch to suffer a severe “psychotic crack” and develop Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). The defense argued that an alter persona named “Maria” was entirely in control during the offense.

Blood spatter was recovered from the bedroom walls, baseboards, and floor area. Blood loss was extensive enough to soak completely through the mattress, carpet, and carpet padding, leaving deep stains on the structural concrete underneath the bed.

On March 17, 2020, a bridge maintenance worker discovered the suitcase discarded beneath the Escambia Bay Bridge in Pace, Florida.

Stauch dismantled her cell phone’s connection to the network for extended intervals, utilized GPS-evasion methods, and was eventually arrested on March 2, 2020, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

CO v. Letecia Stauch – Day 18 Trial Summary

On Day 18 (2 May 2023) of the proceedings, the prosecution officially rested its case, allowing the defense to begin its presentation of evidence. The defense focused its strategy on establishing an insanity defense by calling two mental health professionals to testify about the defendant’s psychiatric history and cognitive state. The first witness, clinical psychologist Dr. Ronda Niederhauser, testified about evaluating the defendant in December 2020. The second witness, psychiatrist Dr. Dorothy Lewis, was qualified as an expert and asserted that the defendant suffered from psychosis and dissociative identity disorder stemming from childhood abuse, concluding that she did not know right from wrong when Gannon was killed. However, the prosecution’s cross-examination exposed a gap in this diagnostic conclusion, forcing the witness to admit she had originally required an EEG and MRI to render her opinion and was entirely unaware that the defense team had voluntarily withdrawn the requests for those tests months prior.

Connection to the case
Expert witness in psychiatry who conducted diagnostic interviews with the defendant in 2022 to evaluate her sanity.
Summary Of Testimony

Dr. Lewis established her extensive qualifications and previous expert witness experience before outlining her evaluation of the defendant. She testified that severe trauma from childhood sexual assault by a stepfather caused the defendant to develop a dissociative disorder where alternative personas could “switch on a dime”. She concluded that this psychosis meant the defendant did not know right from wrong during the crime. On cross-examination, the prosecution severely challenged her methodology; Dr. Lewis admitted that she had initially deemed an EEG and MRI medically necessary before she could confidently render a diagnostic opinion.
