This is the Day 7 of 20 trial report of the murder trial of Letecia Stauch, accused of murdering her stepson Gannon Stauch however she pled not guilty by reason of insanity claiming multiple personalities compelled her to kill her stepson. A jury of her peers convicted her of all counts!
Case Report
Factual background:
In March 2022, Eric Richins was found unresponsive in the bedroom of the home he shared with his wife, Kouri Richins, in Utah. A 911 call was placed in the early morning hours reporting that he was not breathing.
Emergency responders arrived and Eric was pronounced deceased.
A subsequent autopsy and toxicology testing determined that Eric died from acute fentanyl intoxication. The level of fentanyl detected was reported to be significantly elevated.
Following investigation, prosecutors charged Kouri Richins with aggravated murder and related financial crimes. The State alleges that she intentionally administered fentanyl to her husband. The prosecution has also referenced an alleged prior poisoning attempt weeks before his death.
Investigators examined:
- Financial records, including real estate debt and loans.
- Life insurance policies associated with Eric Richins.
- Digital communications and phone data.
- Statements made during the 911 call and at the scene.
The State has argued that financial pressure and marital instability provide motive.
The defense disputes that the State can prove how fentanyl was ingested, challenges aspects of the financial narrative, and maintains that the prosecution cannot establish intentional poisoning beyond reasonable doubt.
Kouri Richins has pleaded not guilty.
The case proceeds as a circumstantial homicide prosecution centered on toxicology evidence, financial documentation, and competing interpretations of marital and post-death conduct.

CO v. Letecia Stauch – Day 7 Trial Summary
Day 7 of the People v. Letecia Stauch trial centered entirely around the extensive and shifting narratives provided by the defendant in the immediate aftermath of Gannon Stauch’s disappearance. The session was dominated by the testimony of lead investigator Jessica Bethel, which served to play and dissect critical audio recordings of a lengthy interview conducted with Letecia Stauch at a local Starbucks. Throughout the day, the prosecution methodically illustrated how the defendant spun elaborate webs of misdirection to steer law enforcement away from her residence.
Stauch frequently modified her timeline, initially asserting that Gannon had fled into the neighborhood out of fear of being disciplined. When that explanation failed to stall the police, she introduced a dramatic alternative scenario, detailing an alleged home invasion by a construction worker named “Eduardo” who she claimed held her at gunpoint, physically assaulted her on a table until she blacked out, and caused Gannon to scream out for help. By mapping out these contradictory statements alongside Stauch’s active resistance to answering direct biological questions, the state strongly established a pattern of deception, culminating in detectives seizing her phone and detaining her at the close of the interview.

Summary Of Testimony
Bethel authenticated and walked the jury through her extensive recorded conversation with the defendant. She testified that Stauch initially claimed Gannon had panicked, freaked out about potentially getting into trouble, and ran away, which supposedly prompted her to go out looking for him. However, as the interview progressed, Stauch radically changed her account, asserting that a “legitimate construction worker” named Eduardo wearing combat boots and a sweater vest had held her at gunpoint and assaulted her on top of a table.
Bethel highlighted how Stauch claimed to have taken more Lorazepam than usual and recounted that Gannon had bravely tried to save her by jumping on the attacker’s back while crying out for help. Crucially, Bethel noted that when pressed on physical specifics—such as whether the attacker had penetrated her—Stauch would fall silent, emit loud exhales, and declare it “wasn’t fair” to ask about her body being violated. Bethel testified that after providing a formal rundown of these conflicting timelines, she and fellow detectives realized the accounts were deceptive; they subsequently seized Stauch’s cell phone and informed her she was being legally detained until a formal search warrant could be executed.
