This is the Day 10 trial report of the murder trial (expected to last until 23rd March 2026) of Kouri Richins, accused of poisoning her husband Eric Richins with Fentanyl, designed to catch you up with the nucleus of the case efficiently!
Case Report
Factual background:
In March 2022, Eric Richins was found unresponsive in the bedroom of the home he shared with his wife, Kouri Richins, in Utah. A 911 call was placed in the early morning hours reporting that he was not breathing.
Emergency responders arrived and Eric was pronounced deceased.
A subsequent autopsy and toxicology testing determined that Eric died from acute fentanyl intoxication. The level of fentanyl detected was reported to be significantly elevated.
Following investigation, prosecutors charged Kouri Richins with aggravated murder and related financial crimes. The State alleges that she intentionally administered fentanyl to her husband. The prosecution has also referenced an alleged prior poisoning attempt weeks before his death.
Investigators examined:
- Financial records, including real estate debt and loans.
- Life insurance policies associated with Eric Richins.
- Digital communications and phone data.
- Statements made during the 911 call and at the scene.
The State has argued that financial pressure and marital instability provide motive.
The defense disputes that the State can prove how fentanyl was ingested, challenges aspects of the financial narrative, and maintains that the prosecution cannot establish intentional poisoning beyond reasonable doubt.
Kouri Richins has pleaded not guilty.
The case proceeds as a circumstantial homicide prosecution centered on toxicology evidence, financial documentation, and competing interpretations of marital and post-death conduct.

UT v. Kouri Richins – Day 10 Trial Summary
Day 10 consolidates the prosecution’s narrative by reinforcing Eric Richins’ non-drug user profile, clarifying the fentanyl-based cause of death, and expanding the evidentiary field through both law enforcement and private investigation. The State strengthens continuity between financial, behavioural, and forensic strands, while introducing the 911 call as an emotional anchor. However, the defence extracts meaningful weaknesses, particularly around investigative integrity (unsecured scene, reliance on third-party timelines) and introduces limited ambiguity through prior drug use and alternative actors, without fully displacing the prosecution’s central theory.
Witness-by-Witness Summaries
Witness #39 – Cody Wright – Eric’s business partner
Key summaries (Click arrow for more)
Connection to the case
Eric’s business partner and long-term associate, directly tied to financial structures (insurance, business operations) and character evidence.
Summary Of Testimony
Wright reinforces Eric as a non-drug user in adulthood, supporting the prosecution’s poisoning theory while also confirming financial distancing from Kouri. Defence introduces limited past drug use to weaken the certainty of that narrative, but without establishing current behaviour or causative relevance.
Key evidence introduced!
- Nothing of note.
Witness #40 – George Throckmorton – Crime Scene Investigator, SLCPD
Key summaries (Click arrow for more)
Connection to the case
Forensic specialist providing technical context and evidentiary presentation.
Summary Of Testimony
Throckmorton serves as a technical and emotional support witness, with the 911 call acting as the primary evidentiary contribution. His testimony provides context but does not materially advance contested factual issues.
Key evidence introduced!
- Nothing of note.
Witness #41 – Jayme Woody – Lead Detective at Salt Lake Police Department
Key summaries (Click arrow for more)
Connection to the case
Lead investigator responsible for initial response and case development.
Summary Of Testimony
Woody establishes the investigative shift from natural death to suspected poisoning, anchoring the fentanyl narrative and introducing prior suspicion toward Kouri. However, defence weakens the testimony by exposing procedural deficiencies and lack of early investigative control, raising questions about reliability.
Key evidence introduced!
- Initial belief that death may have been natural (aneurysm)
Witness #42 – Todd Gabler – Private Investigator
Key summaries (Click arrow for more)
Connection to the case
Independent investigator linked to family dispute and parallel investigation.
Summary Of Testimony
Gabler expands the case by introducing broader investigative leads and third-party connections, while reinforcing the absence of drug use by Eric. Defence challenges his credibility by highlighting independent methods and lack of institutional oversight, positioning his findings as potentially less reliable.
Key evidence introduced!
- Identified Carmen Lauber as a key contact due to high communication frequency.
- No evidence of:
- Eric using illicit drugs
- Eric being involved in an affair
