On day 1, the state presented their evidence to show why they believe Devyn Michaels was responsible for the death of her husband Johnathan Willette, who died on 7th August 2023 after being found on his bed with his head decapitated. Based on evidence presented today, as the first responders arrived at the scene at 8:49 am on 7th August 2023, they testified to a strong chemical smell with bottles similar to those of cleaning products being found at the rooms. Both officer Marquee Cooper and his Sergeant opined to the smell being very strong with the sergeant adding that he could taste it in his throat and there being no blood splatter on the walls. The Crime Scene analyst who arrived later added to this strong smell testimony saying it was overwhelming around the area near the foot of the bed. This suggests that after the murder, the perpetrator had cleaned up the scene to destroy any trace back to them.
