This is the Day 19 of 20 trial report of the murder trial of Letecia Stauch, accused of murdering her stepson Gannon Stauch however she pled not guilty by reason of insanity claiming multiple personalities compelled her to kill her stepson. A jury of her peers convicted her of all counts!
Case Report
Factual background:
On January 27, 2020, while Gannon’s father was away on National Guard deployment, Letecia Stauch killed Gannon in his bedroom.
Stauch entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. The defense’s sole expert witness, psychiatrist Dr. Dorothy Otnow Lewis, testified that severe, suppressed childhood trauma had caused Stauch to suffer a severe “psychotic crack” and develop Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). The defense argued that an alter persona named “Maria” was entirely in control during the offense.
Blood spatter was recovered from the bedroom walls, baseboards, and floor area. Blood loss was extensive enough to soak completely through the mattress, carpet, and carpet padding, leaving deep stains on the structural concrete underneath the bed.
On March 17, 2020, a bridge maintenance worker discovered the suitcase discarded beneath the Escambia Bay Bridge in Pace, Florida.
Stauch dismantled her cell phone’s connection to the network for extended intervals, utilized GPS-evasion methods, and was eventually arrested on March 2, 2020, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

CO v. Letecia Stauch – Day 19 Trial Summary
On Day 19 (3 May 2023) of the proceedings, the defense continued its presentation of evidence, which was entirely occupied by the ongoing expert testimony of psychiatrist Dr. Dorothy Lewis. The day’s session focused heavily on a rigorous cross-examination by the prosecution aimed at undermining the diagnostic foundation of the defendant’s claimed psychosis and Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). Under questioning, Dr. Lewis conceded that the defendant’s actions, such as washing her Tiguan, constituted the deliberate destruction of evidence, and she acknowledged that individuals experiencing psychosis are still fully capable of maintaining normal conversations. The prosecution also leveraged interview audio in which the defendant claimed she did not realize the victim was Gannon and bizarrely asserted that she was “trained to kill” as part of her living. The day concluded following a brief redirect examination that touched upon the diagnostic overlaps between borderline personality disorder and DID.

Connection to the case
Expert witness in psychiatry who conducted diagnostic interviews with the defendant in 2022 to evaluate her sanity.
Summary Of Testimony
Dr. Dorothy Lewis underwent an extensive cross-examination regarding the subjective and objective markers of the defendant’s alleged mental illness. She clarified that her understanding of the defendant’s childhood “Maria” alter-ego relied on family reports rather than direct disclosures from the defendant. While Dr. Lewis maintained that a person in a psychotic state can cleanly execute normal conversations, she struggled to definitively comment on the abstract concept of right versus wrong, and openly agreed that the defendant’s post-incident clean-up of the crime scene and vehicle amounted to destroying evidence. She was further confronted with the defendant’s own recorded statements detailing highly defensive and violent training rationales during the crime.
