Case Report

Factual background:

On January 27, 2020, while Gannon’s father was away on National Guard deployment, Letecia Stauch killed Gannon in his bedroom.

Stauch entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. The defense’s sole expert witness, psychiatrist Dr. Dorothy Otnow Lewis, testified that severe, suppressed childhood trauma had caused Stauch to suffer a severe “psychotic crack” and develop Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). The defense argued that an alter persona named “Maria” was entirely in control during the offense.

Blood spatter was recovered from the bedroom walls, baseboards, and floor area. Blood loss was extensive enough to soak completely through the mattress, carpet, and carpet padding, leaving deep stains on the structural concrete underneath the bed.

On March 17, 2020, a bridge maintenance worker discovered the suitcase discarded beneath the Escambia Bay Bridge in Pace, Florida.

Stauch dismantled her cell phone’s connection to the network for extended intervals, utilized GPS-evasion methods, and was eventually arrested on March 2, 2020, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

CO v. Letecia Stauch – Day 12 Trial Summary

The trial proceedings for Day 12 (21 April 2023) focused exclusively on the continued direct examination of FBI Special Agent Johnny Grusing as the prosecution advanced its evidentiary presentation. The entire session was dedicated to exploring the digital, telephonic, and recorded interview materials obtained during the investigation, highlighting a series of escalating narrative deviations and deflections by the defendant. Agent Grusing presented incriminating internet search queries recovered from the defendant’s phone alongside recorded footage where she introduced highly erratic cover stories—including a falsely pregnant woman at Petco and an alleged mistress named Angel—before ultimately shutting down and refusing to answer critical questions when confronted with physical evidence of Gannon’s blood.

Summary Of Testimony

He reviewed a recorded call where Letecia claimed an allegedly pregnant woman got into her truck at Petco, which contrasted with video interviews where she claimed to be 99% sure Gannon was alive, claimed his hands were peeling, and asserted that a “bath salts” reference was simply due to kids doing drugs at school. Grusing testified that he directly confronted the defendant with her phone search history, which included queries such as “New husband find me a rich guy, who wants to take care of his kids”, “I don’t like my stepson, should I get a divorce”, and “What do you do when someone swallowed poison”.
